Replacement Fences and Lakefront Iron in The Colony

Fox and Jacobs moved the first families into The Colony in October 1974. Today the median home here dates to 1987 and sits on a lot of about 6,969 sq ft. That makes this a replacement market first: short rear and side lines, shared with the neighbors on every side.

Along Lewisville Lake the job changes. On Stewart Peninsula and in The Tribute, owners want black iron that keeps the water and fairway in view, often with cedar on the side lines. The Plano office is about 20 to 25 minutes away, and every job starts with a written plan and one project manager as your contact.

Fence and Outdoor Living Services in The Colony

Wood Fencing

Cedar board-on-board up to the 8 ft 6 in rear-yard limit, built on steel posts driven 4 ft deep along the short shared lines of a tract lot.

Wrought Iron Fence

Black iron for lake and golf course lots. It is also one of three materials The Colony allows in a front yard.

Gates

The 3 ft gate the city requires on fences along an alley or utility easement, framed in welded steel and faced in wood, or built in iron or chain link.

Gate Automation

Driveway gate openers, swing or slide, run by keypad, remote or an access control system, for lake and golf course homes.

Chain Link Fence

Galvanized or black vinyl-coated chain link for back yards and dog runs. The city keeps it out of front yards.

Fence Staining

Stain for new or existing cedar, so the boards on an older fence line hold their color longer.

Pergolas

Cedar pergolas stained before assembly, with an optional polycarbonate roof for shade that also sheds rain. The 3D rendering comes before any lumber is cut.

Custom Patio Covers

A covered patio sized to a compact back yard. Lighting can be built into the cover.

Concrete

Stamped and exposed aggregate patios and walkways that make good use of a smaller lot.

Gates and Fence Lines Built to The Colony Code

The Colony requires at least one gate, 3 ft wide or more, on any fence that runs along a public alley or utility easement, so police and fire crews can get through. We plan that gate into the layout from the start. Its frame is welded steel, and every post is steel driven 4 ft into the ground, so the gate still latches years from now.

Easements shape the fence line too. We check your survey for easements before we set the line. The fence and gates carry our lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as you own the home.

Neighborhoods We Serve in The Colony

Seven areas, from the first Fox and Jacobs streets to the lakefront villages of The Tribute, each with its own lot sizes and fence needs.

Original Fox and Jacobs Sections 75056

The 1970s homes that started the city on about 2,500 acres along the east shore of the lake. Short shared lines here suit cedar privacy fencing with steel posts.

Eastvale and Garza Lake Estates 75056

Eastvale began as a lakeside community in the early 1960s and joined The Colony in 1987. Nearby Garza Lake Estates mixes homes built from 1947 to 2021, so fence age and style change from lot to lot.

Stewart Peninsula 75056

Homes built from 1995 to 2014 around a lakeside golf course, with an HOA. Iron suits the lots that face the course or the water.

The Tribute 75056

A 1,150-acre master-planned community on Lewisville Lake, with villages that include Aberdeen, Balmerino, The Glen, The Lochs and The Gardens. Lots run from zero-lot-line homes to a gated village, and the HOA may set its own fence rules.

Ridgepointe 75056

An HOA community of about 113 homes built from 1994 to 2001. Any original fence still standing here is well past 20 years old.

The Legends: Legend Crest, Legend Trails and Legend Bend 75056

Homes built from 1999 to 2004 under one HOA, The Legends. Replacing the first fence and staining the cedar are the common requests on these lines.

Austin Ranch 75056

Newer homes, townhomes and apartments in a master-planned community south of SH 121 that spans The Colony, Lewisville and Carrollton.

Fence Rules and Recommendations for The Colony

Cedar on Tract Lots, Iron on the Lake

On a lot near 6,969 sq ft, every foot of yard counts. For rear and side lines our standard pick is board-on-board cedar on steel posts, built up to the 8 ft 6 in limit where privacy matters most. On Stewart Peninsula and Tribute lots that face the water or a fairway, black iron keeps the view, and iron is also allowed in a front yard.

The Colony Fence Height and Material Rules

The Colony allows rear and side yard fences up to 8 ft 6 in, measured from the finished grade on the inside of the fence. A fence on a retaining wall is measured from the top of the wall when the yard is level with it. In a front yard the cap is 4 ft, no more than 50 percent of the fence can be solid, and it must be wood, wrought iron or plastic made for fencing; chain link and wire are not allowed there. At street intersections a 30 ft visibility triangle stays clear, 10 ft where an alley or driveway meets a street, and 5 ft where a driveway meets an alley. Any fence along a public alley or utility easement needs at least one gate 3 ft wide. Plywood, corrugated steel, tarps and fiberglass panels are not allowed. Pools need a barrier that meets the city’s adopted pool code, and your HOA’s rules apply on top of the city’s. Source: City of The Colony Fence and/or Retaining Wall Requirements.

We hired Lowery Fence Company to replace the back fence and one side between our house and one of our neighbors, and they exceeded our expectations. From start to finish, they were professional, communicative, and delivered exactly what we wanted — if not better!

Unfortunately, we share our fence line with two neighbors, and the other neighbor chose to go with a different contractor they knew. Seeing the difference between the two companies firsthand, I can confidently say that Lowery Fence is the company you want to go with. Their attention to detail, craftsmanship, and overall customer service truly stood out. I only wish we had used them for the entire fence!

Highly recommend them if you’re looking for quality work and a company that genuinely takes care of its clients.

Everyone on their crew were so kind and really helped us out by using their knowledge to better assess our needs. We had to wait an extra day because of some rain but as soon as it was clear they were out working and didn’t waste any time!

They did an amazing job on my fence. Clean lines, sturdy build, and they finished quicker than I expected. Couldn’t be happier with how it came out!

Lewisville Lake Lots Call for Open Iron

Stewart Peninsula and The Tribute sit on the Lewisville Lake shore, and for many owners the view is the reason they bought. Black wrought iron marks the property line without blocking the water or the fairway. We pair it with cedar where a lot needs privacy from the house next door.

Some lots back up to land the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages around the lake. Private fences are not allowed on Corps land, so on those lots the fence stops at the Corps line. We check early if your lot is one of them, so every post stays on your land.
